Policy Watch 1 – Six Big Education Policy Challenges for 2012
At the start of a new year, Policy Watch identifies six key policy issues that may come to dominate theUKeducation and training agenda in 2012 and offers a synopsis of each.
The six include:

Pocket Watch 1 / 2012 – What’s happening to ICT?
Michael Gove used his recent BETT speech to make some important announcements about education technology in general and school ICT in particular. It followed a speech in December hinting at change and a number of important reports over the year. Pocket Watch 30 – Participation Strategy for 16-24 year olds (16 Dec 2011)
Introduction
On 15 December the Government set out its policy on encouraging more young people to participate in education, training and employment opportunities in the shape of an overall participation strategy for 16-24 year olds. It brings to a head a number of important papers and proposals starting with the Wolf Review and Social Mobility Strategy at the start of the year and ending with the Youth Contract at the end of the year, each of which has helped shape a comprehensive policy response to the concerns about the employment and training prospects for young people. Pocket Watch 29 – Employer ownership of skills (16 Dec 2011)
Introduction
We’re likely to see some important changes coming through in 2012 to both the funding and the operation of the adult skills system. This will be driven by an increasing need to try and stimulate economic and employment growth. Much of the focus will be on simplifying the skills system and granting greater ‘ownership’ to employers. As part of the build up to this, the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) launched a Report this week, that has been welcomed by Government, on what employer ownership might mean. Pocket Watch 28 – Budgets for schools and 16-19 for 2012/13 (14 Dec 2011)
Introduction
As anticipated, schools can expect ‘flat’ budgets for 2012/13. Details were confirmed by Michael Gove in a Statement recently covering funding for schools, 16-19 provision and capital funding generally. The Statement was supported by technical papers on the DSG (Dedicated Schools Grant) and the Pupil Premium and by a further Paper on 16-19 funding and priorities from the YPLA, the Funding Agency for the 16-19 sector.
